Did you know that two former giants of the server world will become end-of-life very soon? The once-ubiquitous Windows Server 2008 will lose its extended support in January 2020 and its contemporary, SQL Server 2008, has less than four months (July 2019) until it reaches end-of-life.
Technology that we use every day easily becomes part of the furniture. We can be led into a false sense of security, assuming it’ll always be around in some shape or form, and that the cries of concern from the tech world are overreactions.
However, for Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 the time for change has well and truly arrived. Continuing to run these servers puts your business at enormous risk of a cyber-attack, in addition to impacting productivity, efficiency and growth.
Luckily, you can take several paths for transformation before it’s too late. Read on for two ways that you can evolve your end-of-life Windows or SQL servers.
Option 1: Make the upgrade
If Windows or SQL are your preferred providers, we recommend taking the traditional route and upgrading at the earliest opportunity. You’ll benefit from the latest features and security capabilities and can choose between hosting on-premise or in the cloud. Yes, a potential downside to upgrading is a price fluctuation, but the rewards in terms of efficiency, collaboration and bolstered security outweigh upgrade costs for most businesses.
Option 2: Move to the cloud
Windows Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 may be working well for your business for the moment and you’re not able to undertake a complete upgrade quite yet. However, running either puts you at significant risk of cyberattacks, so as an interim solution (that’s also more budget-friendly) we advise moving your server to the cloud. If you absolutely must, you could wait until you’re able to upgrade or move to the cloud. In our age of evolving and increasingly severe cyberattacks, you’ll accept security risk as part of the package. Running end-of-life systems will also make it difficult to adopt new tech and applications, remain competitive and maximise IT costs.
